Why Doesn’t My Furnace Ever Stop Running in Greenville, NC?

Even though winter is approaching in Greenville, NC, you don’t want your furnace to run all the time. Not only could you wind up being too warm, but it’s also bad for your system. Read on to find out some common reasons your furnace won’t stop running.

The Furnace Setting Is “On”

When the setting is “on,” the furnace’s fan will run continuously. Although this can give you better indoor air quality, it can use more energy. Unless your home has hot and cold spots, you’re best off just using the “auto” setting, which makes the fan blow only when it tries to heat your home.

The Filter Is Dirty

If you have a dirty air filter, then it adversely affects the flow of air through the furnace. When your filter is dirty, the furnace has to work harder to achieve the temperature you set. In extreme cases, you might wind up with a furnace that won’t turn off.

The Limit Switch Is Faulty

The limit switch regulates the fan and the furnace burners in a gas furnace. When the furnace temperature is warm enough, the limit switch engages the blower fan to move the warm air into your home. If the switch has something wrong with it, then the fan can end up running continuously.

Something’s Wrong With the Thermostat

Your thermostat could send the wrong data to the furnace. It could send a temperature that’s too warm, or it could simply not detect the temperature inside your home. This might be because the thermostat is close to failing, though a wire could also just be loose.
