3 Ways to Save in Winter

You can cut energy costs and increase your comfort by making some simple changes this winter in your New Bern, NC, home. To improve your HVAC system’s efficiency and save money this winter, use your ceiling fans correctly, add insulation and maintain your heater regularly.

Use Ceiling Fans Correctly

Warm air rises to the ceiling, and you can set your ceiling fans to circulate the air inside your home without creating a chilly breeze. Climb a stepladder to flip the small switch in the center of your ceiling fan and change the direction of the blades to rotate clockwise. That way, they can distribute warm air that has risen, and you won’t have to use your heater as much.

Add Insulation

With extra insulation, you can save energy and stay more comfortable by preventing air leaks and drafts. You should check your existing insulation for leaks or mold at least once per season. Replace moldy insulation to keep it from worsening allergy or asthma symptoms.

To check for leaks, turn off your HVAC system and hold a piece of thread near your walls, doors and windows. If the string moves because of a breeze, you there’s likely a gap in your insulation.

You should also use caulk or weatherstripping underneath your windows and doors to prevent drafts. They’re both easy to install and inexpensive.

Maintain Your Heating System

Maintaining your heating system regularly can help you keep your utility bills low and prevent expensive, inconvenient breakdowns. A professional should inspect your heating system at least once per year, preferably in the fall before it gets cold outside.

Also, look at your air filter once per month. Change it if it’s dirty to keep your home’s airflow and indoor air quality high.
