4 Tips for Maintaining Efficient and Effective Windows
Many people might not realize that the windows throughout their homes play a significant role in energy efficiency. Discover ways in which proactive, regular maintenance on your home’s windows can maximize comfort. The impact on comfort, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency means you cannot afford to overlook the windows in your New Bern, North Carolina home.
Seal Leaks
Inspect your windows at least twice a year for leaks, which could allow pollen and allergens to enter your home. Check weatherstripping for signs of cracks or damage and replace any damaged parts as needed.
Examine doors and window frames and surrounding areas for cracks. Seal any openings around nonmoving parts with caulk.
Stop Condensation
Condensation can damage your windows, promoting mold and mildew growth. Condensation typically occurs when a significant temperature difference occurs between the inside and outside of your home. So what do you do if you notice the problem? If you use a humidifier it’s time to turn down or off. You can invest in a dehumidifier if you find that high moisture is a regular problem in your home. Turn on bathroom and kitchen fans during bathing and cooking to prevent water vapor from settling on windows. Keep ceiling fans circulating in other spaces prone to humidity.
Clean Up Mold and Mildew
Despite your best efforts, you may find that the area around your windows is still prone to mold and mildew growth. If this growth becomes a recurring problem in your home, inspect your windows regularly for signs of condensation.
Clean up any signs of mold or mildew immediately with a water-and-vinegar solution. Let the solution dry on the affected area to discourage future mold and mildew problems.
Prevent Exterior Damage
Depending on the extent of damage, window frames can become unsightly. Whether it’s paint peeling or broken parts, it’s important to address these right away. Even more, damaged frames or gaps in caulking also can affect your windows and their energy efficiency. Apply a sealant to the exterior sill and trim around your windows to prevent damage from moisture and weather.
