Greenville, NC Air Conditioning Repair & Service
Greenville is located in Eastern North Carolina near the end of the Pamlico River. It is the county seat of Pitt County. U.S. Highway 264 provides direct access to Raleigh and a connection to Interstate 95. The city has received several nicknames including “The Spirit of the East,” “The Emerald City,” and “G-Vegas.”
Greenville was founded in 1771. Its original location was three miles west of its present location, and it was moved in 1774 so that it would be on the bank of the Tar River. The city was originally named Martinsborough after Royal Governor Josiah Martin and was renamed Greenesville in honor of Revolutionary War General Nathanael Green in 1786. Its name was later shortened to Greenville.
The decision to relocate to the bank of the Tar River proved to be a wise one that accelerated the town’s growth. In the 19th century, passing riverboats brought passengers and goods, and the town became a major exporter of cotton and tobacco. During the 20th Century, the town’s economics shifted and began to center around the East Carolina Teachers College. In 1967, the college became East Carolina University. Shortly after, major pharmaceutical research and manufacturing firms moved into Greenville and further boosted its economy.
